The Dallas Police Department will discontinue hundreds of Flock cameras due to a pause in funding. This decision follows a directive from Texas Governor Greg Abbott to end funding for these AI-driven automated license plate reader systems. Flock cameras capture vehicle details and license plates, and their widespread use has raised concerns about data privacy and surveillance. The Dallas Police Department stated that these cameras are a valuable investigative tool used to combat crime. However, 321 cameras supported by grant funding will be canceled by September 15. Despite this, over 300 Flock cameras will remain operational in Dallas. Texas agencies are clarifying that state funds cannot be used for Flock cameras. Florida is also stopping the use of Flock cameras on state highways due to privacy concerns. Similarly, Tempe and Cave Creek in Arizona have canceled their Flock contracts. Flock Safety acknowledges the decisions while emphasizing their technology's accountability features. Many other jurisdictions have also canceled contracts with license plate reader providers, citing potential misuse and privacy issues.
