Data centers are the buildings of our era. Do they have to be so boring?

Data centers are the defining building type of our time, crucial for supporting our online activities and the rise of AI. A massive building boom is underway, with spending skyrocketing and thousands of data centers already built or planned. However, the architecture of these critical facilities is generally plain and uninspired. Typically, data centers resemble large, utilitarian warehouses with minimal aesthetic appeal. They often feature concrete walls, few windows, and extensive outdoor equipment, often surrounded by security fencing. This design choice represents a missed opportunity to address the negative impacts of data centers, such as high energy consumption and water usage. Some innovative designs are emerging, incorporating natural light, sustainable materials, and urban integration. However, the dominant approach prioritizes rapid expansion and resource acquisition over architectural considerations. As data centers move closer to communities, driven by the AI race, more sensitive and aesthetically pleasing designs are increasingly necessary. Emphasizing design could better reflect the importance of the technology they house and its potential to reshape society.
