Dave Farber Dies at Age 91

The North American Network Operators' Group received a message announcing the sudden passing of David J. Farber. Farber, often called the "grandfather of the Internet," died on February 7, 2026, at the age of 91. His extensive career included work at Bell Labs, the Rand Corporation, and the Federal Communications Commission. He was also a board member for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and a proficient pilot. Farber taught at multiple universities, including the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Pennsylvania. In 2018, he moved to Japan to teach at Keio University. He actively taught until January 22, 2026, showing his dedication to education. Farber greatly valued learning from mentors such as Richard Hamming, Paul Baran, and George Mealy. His colleagues remember him as a mentor, friend, and a strong moral compass. His contributions to the Internet are immeasurable and impacted many.
