Defense secretary postpones trip to Israel amid U.S. concerns of war with Lebanon

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has postponed his visit to Israel due to the escalating fighting on the Israeli-Lebanese border. The Biden administration is concerned that the situation may escalate into an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah. The US has been sending messages to both parties to stop the escalation, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for restraint. Austin was initially scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, as well as visit other countries in the region. However, he spoke with Gallant on the phone and informed him of his decision to postpone the trip. Austin emphasized the need to prioritize a deal to release hostages held by Hamas and establish a ceasefire in Gaza. He also stressed the importance of a diplomatic solution on the border with Lebanon to allow civilians to return home. The US supports Israel in the face of threats from Iran and Hezbollah, and is committed to deterring them. The decision to postpone the trip was reportedly due to a combination of regional tensions and scheduling issues. A Pentagon spokesman confirmed that there are no trips to announce at this time.
