The Grand Canyon stretches 278 miles along the Colorado River, from Lee's Ferry to the Grand Wash Cliffs. Lee's Ferry and Pearce Ferry serve as common starting and ending points for river trips. While the north side is largely within Grand Canyon National Park, much of the south side belongs to Native American reservations. The Hualapai Reservation encompasses the section from River Mile 165 to 273 along the south shore. Diamond Creek, located within the Hualapai Reservation, is the sole location in the Grand Canyon accessible by automobile. Many commercial river trips conclude at Diamond Creek instead of proceeding to Pearce Ferry. Some visitors also undertake shorter trips from Diamond Creek to Pearce Ferry, a scenic stretch with minor rapids. The Hualapai people offer these trips during warmer months. The Diamond Creek road follows an ancient Hualapai route to the river, with the first car reportedly navigating it in 1914. A lodging known as the Farlee Hotel existed near the river in the late 1800s but was destroyed by floods.
