Did a popular music album just drop? A hidden—and deadly—effect will follow
A new study links major album release days to increased traffic fatalities. Researchers found a 15% rise in fatal car crashes on these release days. This increase amounted to an additional 182 deaths compared to surrounding periods. The study compared fatal crash data with top album release days on Spotify from 2017 to 2022. The lead author was inspired by a personal near-miss while distracted by new music. While correlation isn't causation, the study ruled out other common explanations for the spike. For instance, the increase persisted even when comparing release Fridays to other Fridays. The researchers conducted simulations to ensure the results were statistically significant. The findings suggest drivers, particularly those alone, are more prone to distraction. To stay safe, passengers can manage the music or drivers can set up playlists before departing. Music streaming platforms could also implement safety reminders to drivers.
