Digging Starts On New $16 Billion Train Tunnel Project Under Hudson River

Elected officials recently attended the ceremonial launch of a massive boring machine in New Jersey. This machine will soon begin drilling through the Palisades Cliffs as the initial phase of the Hudson Tunnel Project. The project aims to alleviate significant train congestion into and out of New York City by building a new tunnel. The existing tunnel, constructed in 1910, is a major cause of delays for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters. This ambitious infrastructure endeavor will add two new tunnels under the Hudson River for Amtrak and NJ Transit trains. The estimated cost for the project is $16 billion, with completion anticipated by 2035. The federal government initially attempted to freeze $11 billion in authorized funding over DEI principles. However, New York and New Jersey sued, leading a federal judge to rule the funding freeze unlawful. This ruling allowed the project to proceed, with two boring machines set to drill through one mile of hard rock. The Hudson Tunnel Project is a key component of the broader Northeast Corridor modernization initiative.
