Disney just sued the Trump administration over an ‘unprecedented’ move against ABC
Disney and ABC have filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration. The lawsuit accuses the administration of using regulatory power to retaliate against perceived political enemies. Specifically, the FCC, under the direction of Chair Brendan Carr, has demanded an unusually early renewal of broadcast licenses for ABC's eight local TV stations. This action is seen as a punitive measure against ABC for its critical coverage and on-air commentary. The FCC claims the review is due to concerns about ABC's DEI practices. However, the lawsuit highlights the timing of this review, which occurred shortly after President Trump called for Jimmy Kimmel's firing. Kimmel had made a controversial joke about Melania Trump. The FCC is also investigating "The View" for alleged violations of equal broadcast time rules. Disney and ABC fear losing their broadcast licenses if the FCC holds a hearing. This early renewal request is described as unprecedented and a chilling effect on broadcasters. Former FCC officials warn it's a violation of law and the Constitution, aiming to censor speech. Conservative groups have also petitioned the FCC to revoke ABC's license, citing partisan bias. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies have approved media mergers that could reshape news outlets. The lawsuit asserts that the administration has escalated attacks on ABC's speech, culminating in demands to strip its licenses due to its reporting and programming.
