DOJ Alleges UCLA Law School Discriminated By Race In Admissions

The Department of Justice has accused UCLA School of Law of illegal discrimination in its admissions process. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon stated that the law school allegedly uses a two-tiered system where race impacts acceptance rates. This practice violates federal Civil Rights Laws and the recent Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action. The DOJ's review of admissions materials for classes of 2023, 2024, and 2025 revealed potential discrimination. Investigators found that personal statements and essay prompts were designed to elicit racial information. Furthermore, staff allegedly guided applicants on how to disclose their race during recruitment events. Evidence suggests that white and Asian applicants with higher LSAT scores were rejected in favor of admitted black and Hispanic candidates with lower scores. Internal university documents allegedly indicate an intent to discriminate, with statements expressing pride in admitting a high percentage of students of color. The DOJ states that UCLA did not significantly alter its admissions practices post-Supreme Court decision. UCLA Law maintains its admissions are merit-based and comply with all laws, while the DOJ is pursuing settlement negotiations.
