Dutch Government Takes Control of China-Owned Chipmaker Nexperia

The Dutch government has temporarily nationalized the Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia due to concerns about the availability of critical products. This unprecedented move was executed using a Dutch law called the "Availability of Goods Act." The action, however, will not transfer full ownership of Nexperia to the Dutch government. Instead, it grants the government the right to oversee and potentially overrule management decisions. Regular production at Nexperia continues despite the intervention. Wingtech, Nexperia's parent company, criticized the action as driven by geopolitical bias and excessive interference. Wingtech further alleged that some non-Chinese executives attempted a "power grab" through legal proceedings. A Dutch court suspended Wingtech's CEO, Zhang Xuezheng, from his position and appointed a Dutch businessman to replace him. The Dutch government stated that administrative problems at Nexperia threatened the company's technological knowledge, which is crucial for Dutch and European economic security. Nexperia is a major manufacturer of simple chips and advanced semiconductors. Wingtech stated that the Dutch actions will restrict its control over Nexperia.
