Earth's Climate Has Passed Its First Irreversible Tipping Point and Entered a 'New Reality'
A new report reveals that climate change has triggered the crossing of the first major climate tipping point, impacting warm-water coral reefs irreversibly. This signifies a critical moment as it marks the first time a significant climate threshold has been surpassed. The report highlights that once these tipping points are crossed, they trigger self-sustaining, irreversible changes. These changes ultimately lead to unpredictable climate conditions worldwide. Besides the negative impacts, the report also emphasizes progress related to positive tipping points. The rapid development of green technologies is one of the major positive changes. This includes advancements in solar and wind power, indicating a shift towards cleaner energy sources. The report warns the world is entering a 'new reality' regarding global temperature. The 1.5C target of the Paris Climate Agreement will inevitably be surpassed. It is the Global Tipping Points Report 2025, the second version, focusing on key thresholds in Earth’s climate system. The report’s findings will be presented at the upcoming COP30 climate conference.
