Egypt Arrests, Disappears Entire Newsroom Over 'Fake News' Allegations

Egyptian authorities have detained the entire newsroom of the independent media outlet Matsada2sh, sparking widespread condemnation. Six journalists—Mohamed Ashraf Abu Emeira, Abdallah Qadry, Islam Barakat, Omar Helal, Mohamed Mahmoud, and Mohamed Adel—were arrested, bringing the total number of detained journalists in Egypt to 24. Rights groups, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), denounced this as a "first" and an "alarming escalation" of press repression. During the raids, security forces confiscated phones and laptops without presenting arrest warrants or disclosing the journalists' whereabouts. The interior ministry confirmed the arrests, alleging the platform was unlicensed, "run from abroad," spread "fake news," and was affiliated with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. Matsada2sh, founded in 2018, is a fact-checking outlet that corrects misinformation from both official and opposition sources. Rights groups emphasized the importance of independent journalism and criticized Egypt's actions as contrary to commitments to dialogue and transparency. One of Matsada2sh's founders, Abdelrahman Mansour, expressed concern for the journalists' safety and called for their release. This move highlights a severe crackdown on free speech and independent media in Egypt. The families remain unaware of the journalists' location, raising further alarm.
