The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is experiencing a significant delay in hurricane formation. This drought in hurricane development is largely attributed to an intensifying El Niño. El Niño is creating strong wind shear, which hinders the development of tropical systems. As of late August, four named tropical storms have formed, but none have strengthened into hurricanes. Tropical Storm Dolly, currently a strong tropical wave, is forecast to bring rain and wind to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Dolly's remnants are also showing a potential track towards South Florida. Another area of low pressure is being monitored off the coast of Louisiana. This system has seen increasing thunderstorm activity but has not yet strengthened. Gradual development is possible as it moves toward the Louisiana and upper Texas coasts. The peak of hurricane season is approaching around September 10th.
