Election Battles For State Legislature Supermajorities Heat Up

The 2024 general election will see significant changes in statehouses as 527 organizations, such as the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and Republican State Leadership Committee, invest heavily in down-ballot races. This could potentially break or create supermajorities in various states. Currently, there are 23 Republican trifectas and 17 Democratic trifectas, with 10 divided governments. Supermajorities exist in 57 of the 99 legislative chambers, with Republicans holding 41 of those veto-proof advantages and Democrats owning 20. These supermajorities have led to significant policy changes, such as new abortion restrictions and election laws, and have limited the power of governors in some states. National groups are increasingly involved in statehouse races, turning them into national contests.
