X and Musk’s xAI company, which created the AI chatbot Grok, also face scrutiny from Britain's data privacy regulator. Grok, accessible through X, generated widespread outrage by producing sexually explicit deepfake images. The French investigation, initiated in January, involves charges including complicity in distributing child pornography and denying crimes against humanity. Prosecutors are conducting interviews with involved parties and investigating potential violations of French law. Europol is assisting French authorities in their investigation. The inquiry expanded after Grok produced Holocaust-denying statements and inappropriate deepfakes. The UK Information Commissioner's Office is investigating potential data law breaches related to Grok's use. X is also under investigation by the EU for similar issues, which previously resulted in a significant fine. SpaceX recently acquired xAI, integrating Grok, X, and Starlink.
