Enhanced data resilience with cross-region backups in Backup and DR Service

Organizations need a strong data backup strategy for business continuity. Multi-region backups offer high availability but can be expensive. A new, more cost-effective solution called cross-region backups is now generally available. This allows backup destinations to be in a different region than the source data. This decoupling protects against regional outages while respecting data residency rules. Currently, it supports Compute Engine instances, Disks, and Filestore, with Cloud SQL and AlloyDB to follow. Cross-region backups optimize costs by allowing granular selection of recovery regions. They also simplify compliance with data residency laws like GDPR. This feature improves regional resilience by storing data copies in entirely different geographical areas. Implementing cross-region backups involves creating a backup vault in a separate region. Then, a backup plan is configured in the resource's region but points to the secondary vault. Finally, attaching the plan automates data transfer to the regional backup vault. This new capability provides resilience and cost-efficiency without sacrificing compliance.
