ESMA asks input on the retail investor journey

ESMA, the EU's financial markets regulator, has initiated a Call for Evidence (CfE) on the retail investor journey under MiFID II. This CfE aims to understand how retail investors interact with investment services and identify barriers to capital market participation. ESMA seeks feedback to analyze trends, including the appeal of speculative products and social media's influence. The study explores the practical application of MiFID II requirements, encompassing disclosures and suitability assessments. It also considers the investor experience under the European crowdfunding framework and investor protection versus informed risk-taking. ESMA has published a summary in all EU languages to encourage responses from consumers and their representatives. The goal is to evaluate whether current rules support or hinder retail investor engagement and if simplifications are possible. Interested parties, like firms and consumer organizations, have until July 21, 2025, to submit their input. ESMA will then analyze the responses with National Competent Authorities to determine needed regulatory adjustments. The aim is to enhance investor protection and improve retail participation in financial markets. This initiative is part of ESMA's wider efforts to simplify processes and reduce burdens.
