ESMA consults on rules for ESG Rating Providers

The European Securities and Markets Authority has published a Consultation Paper on draft Regulatory Technical Standards under the ESG Rating Regulation. This regulation aims to improve the transparency and integrity of Environmental, Social and Governance rating activities. The draft Regulatory Technical Standards cover various aspects that apply to ESG rating providers, including the information to be provided in applications for authorisation and recognition. The standards also address measures to mitigate risks of conflicts of interest within ESG rating providers that carry out other activities. Additionally, the draft standards outline the information that ESG rating providers should disclose to the public, rated items, and issuers of rated items, as well as users of ESG ratings. ESMA is seeking feedback on the consultation by 20 June 2025 and plans to publish a Final Report and submit the draft standards to the European Commission for adoption in October 2025. The authority encourages entities that intend to apply for registration as ESG Rating Providers, financial market participants, users of ESG ratings, and rated entities to participate in the consultation. The consultation is an important step in developing regulatory technical standards that will promote transparency and integrity in ESG rating activities. The European Securities and Markets Authority is responsible for regulating and supervising financial markets in the EU, and this consultation is part of its efforts to promote sustainable finance. The consultation paper and further information are available on the ESMA website, and interested parties can contact the authority for more details.
