ESMA provides updated instructions for weekly commodity derivative position reporting

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has released updated reporting instructions and an XML schema (version 1.2.0) for weekly commodity derivatives position reporting. These updates are a result of the latest review of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II). Key changes include the requirement for two weekly reports and the exclusion of spot emission allowances from position reporting. The updated schema also harmonizes reporting units for energy derivatives. These adjustments stem from ESMA's Final Report submitted in December 2024, which is awaiting adoption by the European Commission. ESMA's aim is to maintain a consistent reporting framework and reduce the need for frequent schema and instruction modifications. The new XML schema and reporting instructions will become effective on April 1, 2026. Reporting entities must exclusively use version 1.2.0 from this date onwards. Any technical issues encountered by stakeholders should be reported to ESMA via email. The announcement provides contact information for further inquiries.
