ESMA recognises the Clearing Corporation of India Limited as a Tier 1 third-country CCP

The European Securities and Markets Authority, known as ESMA, has recognized The Clearing Corporation of India Limited as a significant central counterparty. This recognition classifies CCIL as a Tier 1 third-country CCP under EMIR. The designation allows CCIL to offer its clearing services to various EU entities. These entities include trading venues and clearing members, such as banks and investment firms. ESMA's decision confirms that CCIL meets the requirements stipulated by EMIR. These requirements involve an equivalence decision from the European Commission regarding India's CCP regulatory framework. Effective supervision and enforcement by the Reserve Bank of India are also crucial. Furthermore, cooperation arrangements between ESMA and the RBI were a key factor. ESMA and the RBI recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year. This recognition became effective on June 30, 2026. CCIL has now been added to ESMA's official list of recognized third-country CCPs.
