EU Joins US-Led Pax Silica Alliance To Secure AI Supply Chains
The U.S.-led Pax Silica partnership, aimed at securing supply chains for AI and other critical technologies, has expanded to include the European Commission, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands. This announcement was made at a summit in Washington on June 23, where the partnership reinforced its focus on semiconductors, critical minerals, energy, and advanced manufacturing. U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg emphasized the significance of these new members, noting the EU's market size, Germany's industrial strength, Greece's strategic location, and the Netherlands' role in semiconductor equipment. Members signed a declaration committing to mutual prosperity, technological progress, and economic security, while also aiming to reduce supply chain dependencies.Launched in December 2025, Pax Silica initially included Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Israel, and has since grown to incorporate Australia, India, the Philippines, Sweden, the UAE, and the UK. Taiwan supports the initiative's principles but is not a formal signatory. U.S. officials state the partnership intends to establish trusted supply chains among allies, thereby reducing reliance on China for advanced chips, critical minerals, and AI infrastructure. China currently dominates global rare earth processing and holds significant shares in critical mineral mining. The partnership is moving into practical applications, exemplified by the U.S. and Philippines' plan for a 4,000-acre economic security zone in the Luzon Economic Corridor, intended as the first AI-native industrial acceleration hub. Discussions are also underway with Kazakhstan regarding cooperation on critical minerals. Further announcements on new members and projects are anticipated soon.
