EuroPython: Humans of EuroPython: Emma Cooke
This article highlights Emma Cooke's significant contributions to EuroPython 2026 as part of the Accessibility Team. Emma's involvement elevated the conference's approach to inclusivity, aiming to make it welcoming for all attendees. She described her volunteering experience as energizing, welcoming, and fulfilling. Having previously attended as an attendee and then as a volunteer, her role in 2026 on the organizing committee was her first in that capacity. Emma focused on making the conference physically accessible and supportive for neurodivergent individuals. Her responsibilities included ensuring quiet rooms, providing stim toys, and addressing various attendee needs like childcare and dietary requirements. A key achievement was introducing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme to EuroPython. This initiative allows individuals with non-visible disabilities to discreetly signal they might need understanding. Emma's perspective on conferences has fundamentally changed, fostering deep appreciation for behind-the-scenes work. She encourages others to volunteer to collaborate with passionate individuals, make a tangible impact, and gain unique insights.
