Every product in this supermarket is made from felt. All 20,000 of them
The Momentary gallery in Bentonville, Arkansas, features an art exhibition titled "The Beginning of Convenience" by British artist Lucy Sparrow. Sparrow specializes in creating handmade felted objects and has recreated a 1980s and 90s-style supermarket entirely out of felt. All 20,000 objects in the installation are made from this material, including familiar childhood favorites like Frosted Flakes and Wonder Bread, rendered with slight, unsettling alterations. The exhibition explores American retail and the rise of convenience culture between 1975 and 1995. Sparrow's immersive installations aim to transform shared community spaces into theatrical artistic environments. "The Beginning of Convenience" took over two years to research and develop, with Sparrow learning new skills like creating neon signs for the project. Alongside the supermarket replica, the show includes a documentary, vintage ads, and a recreation of Sparrow's studio. Sparrow hopes the exhibition inspires joy and nostalgia, encouraging intergenerational conversation. The exhibition is open from July 18, 2026, to July 11, 2027.
