Everyone Is Using AI in Interviews. No One Is Saying It Out Loud.

The widespread concern about AI "cheating" in technical interviews misidentifies the core issue. The problem isn't AI usage itself, but rather that interview designs are obsolete for the modern engineering stack. Formerly, scarcity lay in syntax, algorithms, and manual debugging, but AI now automates these. Scarce skills have shifted to architectural reasoning, constraint evaluation, and AI output validation. High-stakes interviews incentivize candidates to optimize performance, making AI assistance a rational choice where detection is imperfect. Furthermore, reliably preventing AI usage requires invasive and costly surveillance, an unstable enforcement model. Interviews' compressed format also amplifies the perception of AI's usefulness by stabilizing performance under stress. A fundamental misalignment exists: companies expect AI in production but ban it in evaluation, creating an unstable system. The key error is measuring code generation, which is now cheap; interviews should instead focus on judgment, evaluation, and risk mitigation. We are in a silent adaptation phase, as technology outpaces hiring frameworks. Aggressive enforcement will trigger an arms race, increasing costs and distrust. Stable solutions involve redesigning evaluations to measure higher abstractions. By 2030, interviews will likely assume AI, measure AI literacy, and focus on architectural critique. The strategic question for leaders is whether they're measuring the correct abstraction layer. AI merely exposed pre-existing fragilities in interview design. Redesigning interviews to assess judgment, not recall, is the path to stability.
