Ex-Google DeepMind Researcher Also Warns AI Could 'Kill All Humans'. But Meta's Zuckerberg Believes Safety is Up to Each AI Company
A former Google DeepMind employee has joined other AI researchers in warning that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity. Bilal Chughtai expressed a belief that AI has the potential to cause mass death and that time is running out to prevent it. This follows similar concerns raised by researchers at Anthropic, with one stating there's a significant chance of AI killing all humans within a decade. These warnings highlight growing public apprehension about advanced AI capabilities. In contrast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed back against calls for a coordinated slowdown in AI development. He asserts that individual AI companies are motivated and liable to ensure their technology is safe. Zuckerberg believes each lab has the responsibility and incentive to develop AI at a safe pace. He pointed to Meta delaying its Muse AI agent's release for safety reasons as an example of their approach.Zuckerberg advocates for prioritizing the building of safe AI models over systems capable of recursive self-improvement. He suggests focusing compute power on serving people rather than accelerating self-improvement. However, he also acknowledges the value of independent evaluators and advisors, stating Meta already utilizes them. Ultimately, Zuckerberg believes maintaining a balance of power is key to a positive future that is achievable.
