A new coalition called RAISE US has been formed by employers, state governors, and foundations to address the potential workforce disruption caused by artificial intelligence. This group has already raised over $500 million towards its multiyear goal of preparing the U.S. workforce for significant AI-driven changes. The coalition, co-led by former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, will collaborate with states like Arkansas, Maryland, Utah, and Connecticut. Its mission extends beyond just retraining programs to include rethinking policies such as unemployment insurance. RAISE US aims to act as a testing ground for effective worker transition strategies. They plan to explore corporate incentives for companies to retain and reskill workers whose jobs are affected by AI. The group will also work with educators to develop diverse training options and propose policy adjustments, like modified unemployment benefits for those starting new businesses. Pilot programs are set to launch in participating states, with Maryland focusing on expanding service-year options and Arkansas developing an AI-powered career navigation platform. The organization believes that states are well-positioned to implement workforce policies through their community college systems. Microsoft, a backer, shared their successful model of cross-training employees to adapt to evolving roles. While rejecting universal basic income, the coalition emphasizes finding new job pathways, though the rate of job creation versus destruction by AI remains uncertain. Some experts suggest that long-term income support might still be necessary given this uncertainty.
