Exclusive: Big Philanthropy teams up to take on Big AI
Ten major philanthropic organizations formed Humanity AI, a $500 million initiative, to ensure AI benefits humanity. The initiative aims to give regular people, not just wealthy tech figures, a voice in AI's development. This coalition includes foundations like Doris Duke and Ford, pooling resources for grants. Their primary goal is to ensure AI enhances communities and human creativity, not just profits. They recognize the need to balance the influence of big tech companies in AI policy. Despite not matching industry investments, they aim to make a meaningful impact through collaboration. The coalition seeks to expand the AI conversation to include diverse perspectives and address potential job displacement concerns. Humanity AI will support projects focusing on data privacy, workforce impacts, and intellectual property rights. They want to empower underrepresented groups to shape AI's direction and advocate for public accountability. Further, the initiative will focus on preserving intellectual property in the creative industries. The core goal is to foster AI that supports human flourishing, not merely technological advancement. Grants will start in 2025, with a pooled fund managed through Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
