Exclusive: UN launches "AI for Good" commission

A new UN-backed commission, the AI for Good Global Commission, aims to unite tech executives and heads of state to develop global solutions for artificial intelligence. This initiative seeks to bridge the growing divide in AI regulation by connecting those building advanced AI with global politicians. The commission, co-chaired by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, will hold its first meeting on July 8 in Geneva. Its membership includes leaders from major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia, as well as presidents and policymakers from various nations. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff emphasized the need for values to guide AI development, stating that responsibility is central to AI ethics. The commission intends to bring together AI creators, deployers, policy shapers, and community representatives. Their inaugural meeting will focus on strengthening AI infrastructure and accelerating AI's positive impact on critical sectors. They also aim to foster trust and safety in AI technologies. A significant challenge will be achieving cohesive goals that transcend political differences and national sovereignty concerns. Progress is most likely in efforts to expand AI access to underserved populations globally. The commission's formation follows related UN dialogues on AI governance.
