Executive Order Execution: Three Reactors Achieved Criticality Before July 4th
The Department of Energy announced that microreactor developer Deployable Energy achieved criticality with their Unity reactor design at Idaho National Labs. This marks the third privately developed and funded reactor this year to reach this crucial milestone. The DOE's Executive Order 14301 aimed to accelerate advanced nuclear technology commercialization. In response, the DOE launched the Reactor Pilot Program (RPP) and the Fuel Line Pilot Program. Several companies participated in the RPP, with Antares and Valar Atomics also achieving criticality in June. Deployable Energy's success is notable as they were not part of the RPP but rather the Nuclear Energy Launch Pad program. This program serves as the future successor to the RPP. Many other companies are still working towards criticality as they prepare for commercialization.
