Google is expanding its global network infrastructure in the Americas with three new subsea cable systems: Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz. These cables, along with an extension of the Firmina cable and prior investments, form a network called Americas Connect. The Alisios cable will link the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Chile, named after trade winds. Canoa, a Taíno word for canoe, will connect the Dominican Republic to Bermuda, enhancing connectivity to Europe and North America. OlaLuz will directly connect the Dominican Republic to Florida, using Spanish words for wave and light. A new branch of the Firmina cable will also land in the Dominican Republic, extending its reach. Americas Connect aims to improve the reach, reliability, and resilience of connectivity infrastructure across different regions. The network will create redundant paths in the Pacific, interlink Caribbean connections, and connect the Atlantic to Google Cloud regions in the U.S. and Europe. Government officials from the Dominican Republic, Panama, Bermuda, and Chile expressed enthusiasm for these investments. These new subsea cables are expected to boost digital connectivity, foster economic growth, and bridge the digital divide. Google continues to invest in a more connected and open global cloud network through these strategic expansions.
