Federal Judge Upholds New York's Driver's Licenses For Illegals

A federal judge dismissed the Trump administration's challenge to New York's Green Light Law, which allows driver's licenses for individuals regardless of legal U.S. residency. Judge Nardacci determined the administration failed to prove the state law violated federal law. The Justice Department sued New York, arguing the law undermined federal immigration enforcement. New York Attorney General James defended the law, emphasizing its protection of all New Yorkers' rights. The Green Light Law aims to improve road safety and insurance coverage by allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain licenses. Applicants must still meet standard requirements like permits and road tests, using alternative IDs without a Social Security number. The Trump administration argued the law hindered federal access to driver data, making immigration enforcement more difficult. The judge found that federal authorities could still access information via court orders. Critics, including former ICE officials and a sheriff, argued the law makes it easier for criminals and hinders investigations.
