A former Google engineer, Linwei Ding, has been convicted on federal charges related to stealing AI trade secrets. The jury found Ding guilty of economic espionage and theft of trade secrets. Ding, also known as Leon Ding, stole over 2,000 pages of confidential AI information from Google. He uploaded the information to his personal cloud account between 2022 and 2023. At the same time, Ding secretly collaborated with two Chinese technology companies. He planned to become CTO of one company and even founded his own AI company in China. Ding aimed to replicate Google's AI technology to build a supercomputer. He downloaded the trade secrets to his computer before resigning from Google in late 2023. Google discovered the theft after Ding presented himself as a CEO at an investor conference. Ding booked a one-way flight to Beijing after telling his manager he was leaving. The U.S. Attorney emphasized the importance of protecting AI innovation.
