FreeBSD Project Isn't Ready To Let AI Commit Code Just Yet
The FreeBSD Project's latest status report for Q2 2025 highlights progress in several areas of the FreeBSD operating system. These updates include enabling FreeBSD applications to run on Linux, ongoing Chinese translation efforts, and support for Solaris Extended Attributes and Apple's HFS+ file system. A significant development is the core team's work on a policy regarding generative AI-created code and documentation. While AI shows promise for tasks like translations, document explanation, bug tracking, and code comprehension, the project currently avoids using it for code generation. This caution stems from concerns about licensing. The policy development is an ongoing process, with discussions continuing at the BSDCan 2025 developer summit. The core team is actively seeking feedback and refining this policy. The finalized policy will be incorporated into the Contributors Guide within the documentation repository. The project acknowledges the potential utility of AI but prioritizes licensing compliance and responsible implementation.
