French Counterterror Police Arrest 'Ultra-Left' Activist Over Limoges City Hall Fire
French police arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of involvement in the arson of Limoges city hall. The elite RAID unit apprehended him at his home. He is considered a person of interest in the fire, though he has not been charged and is presumed innocent. Investigators identified him by meticulously reviewing images and videos of the incident. He is reportedly an ultra-left activist already on a security watchlist. He is also suspected of earlier sabotage acts. The Justice Ministry believes the suspect did not act alone, indicating a concerted effort by a large group. This group used significant pyrotechnic devices to set the city hall ablaze. The investigation is being handled jointly by local police and a national counterterrorism unit. The national anti-terrorist prosecutor's office is monitoring the case. The fire destroyed much of the historic city hall building. Nineteen people were taken into custody on the day of the fire, and four police officers were injured. The mayor criticized the national police for insufficient crowd control measures during the riots. He has requested state funding for rebuilding the city hall and is awaiting a visit from the Prime Minister.
