‘From actually doing work’ to ‘babysitting Claudes’: Anthropic employees on how their jobs have changed in the past year

Working at Anthropic reveals a future where AI significantly reshapes the workplace, potentially setting trends for the broader economy. The company's internal report highlights both the immense productivity gains from AI and the new challenges it introduces. Anthropic asserts that AI tools, particularly Claude, have drastically improved efficiency across various departments, from coding to sales and contract processing. However, this increased AI productivity causes bottlenecks, with AI agents spending 80% of their time waiting for human input. This shift has changed employee roles, as many now find themselves managing AI agents rather than performing original work, a task some liken to babysitting. Employees describe these AI agents as having difficulty prioritizing tasks, treating all issues with equal urgency, demanding constant human intervention. Despite the productivity gains, a third of employees feel an "eternal pressure" to use AI for everything, leading to extremely fast work expectations. When not managing AI, employees are increasingly in meetings, with the median time spent in meetings rising by 20% in the past year, underscoring the indispensable need for human coordination. This reliance on AI is also changing hiring practices, with a significant drop in junior-level technical hires as AI agents take over more entry-level tasks and work longer hours than humans.
