G7 nations to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel fuel to curb high prices

The Group of Seven wealthy democracies announced plans to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products. This release aims to address record-high diesel prices, particularly in the United States. President Trump stated the diesel release would commence immediately. He is facing pressure to lower prices ahead of the November midterm elections, as his economic approval ratings have declined. Surging gas prices globally are linked to the ongoing war and previous trade battles. Diesel prices have reached record highs in both the U.S. and Europe. France, holding the G7 presidency, made the announcement following videoconference talks. The G7 countries include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with EU representation. This action follows a previous release of 426 million barrels by International Energy Agency members. G7 leaders believe this united decision will increase market liquidity and lower prices. Factors contributing to higher prices include the war, Russia's export ban, and reduced shipments from Persian Gulf producers. While some U.S. Republicans suggested banning diesel exports, the G7 agreed not to limit energy exports among members. Analysts caution that a U.S. export ban could have negative long-term consequences for supply. President Trump discussed rising fuel prices with French President Macron prior to the G7 meeting. Trump is actively campaigning for his party's control of Congress in the upcoming elections.
