Game Console Market Craters: Xbox and PS5 Sales Plummet Over 25%

Video game console sales in the U.S. have significantly declined this year according to industry advisor Mat Piscatella. PlayStation 5 sales are down 25%, reaching their lowest point since 2013. Xbox has experienced an even steeper drop, with sales down 33% year-to-date, marking an all-time low since its launch. This downturn is attributed to rising prices driven by the chip shortage. Microsoft has increased Xbox prices multiple times, making models significantly more expensive. The 512GB Xbox Series S now costs $499.99, and the 1TB version is $599.99. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition is $749.99, with the disc version at $799.99. Sony has also raised PlayStation 5 prices by $100 to $150. The PS5 Digital Edition now starts at $599.99, and the disc version at $649.99. The PS5 Pro is priced at $899.99. The PlayStation Portal streaming device increased by $50 to $249.99. Even refurbished PS5 Slim consoles saw a $100 price increase, now costing $399. Piscatella warns that the U.S. hardware market is in its most precarious state since the early 1980s.
