Gaylordsville Spite House in New Milford, Connecticut

The "Spite House" in Gaylordsville, Connecticut, was built in 1961 by Jan Pol as a protest against the state taking away his adopted daughter. The five-tiered, wedding cake-shaped structure was constructed from unconventional materials, including old bottles. Local lore surrounds the house, including rumors of a buried body and Pol's paternity of the child. Pol's autobiography, "The Passage of My Life," offers insights into the spiteful intentions behind the house's construction. Despite initial criticism for its unconventional design, the Spite House has since become a local landmark and is currently undergoing restoration by its new owner. It stands as a testament to the emotional distress and personal motivations that can drive architectural creations.
