Google Drive now offers Gemini-powered AI classification in open beta, streamlining data identification and labeling. This feature enhances data loss prevention, establishes retention rules, and aids audit investigations at scale. It also fortifies security in the agentic era by preventing autonomous access to sensitive data. Gemini models apply classification labels to Drive files, eliminating the need for manual training. Instead, administrators define instructions for the AI to interpret and evaluate files. Admins retain full control, selecting labels and providing instructions. Editors and owners can review and accept or modify Gemini-applied labels, with all actions logged for audit purposes. This improves data classification accuracy at scale, addressing a common organizational challenge. The gradual rollout is expected to complete by September 30th for supported Enterprise and Education licenses. Administrators can configure this feature in the Workspace Admin Console under Data Classification in the Security section.
