Germany Opens New Drone Security Center Amid Fears Of Russian Hybrid Warfare
European officials have expressed concerns about Russian hybrid and sabotage warfare targeting Europe, particularly in light of the ongoing Ukraine war. A recent drone incident near Leipzig Airport, where an explosive-laden drone was found, heightened these worries. Reports indicate the drone was intended for an aircraft belonging to Antonov Airlines, a Ukrainian cargo carrier. This event follows a pattern of mysterious drone incidents at European aviation hubs. While some incidents may be minor, EU officials suspect Russian-linked malicious actors. In response, Germany is enhancing its anti-drone security measures. The country has established its first major drone security research center, the Drone Security Technology Center, as part of the German Aerospace Centre. This new facility, located in Cochstedt, will focus on developing technology to detect and counter hostile drone activity. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the drone threat as part of a modern "shadow war." The center aims to be a unique national facility for researching and testing innovative drone security technologies. It will provide a crucial platform for testing drones and counter-drone systems in real-world conditions and diverse scenarios.
