Claude Code, an agentic coding tool from Anthropic, previously integrated with Google Cloud through individual developer configurations. However, scaling this across an organization presented challenges like credential management and lack of centralized control. The new Claude apps gateway addresses this by acting as a self-hosted service between local Claude Code clients and Google Cloud. This gateway centralizes identity, policy, cost management, and routing for improved governance. It integrates with identity providers for seamless user authentication without exposing sensitive credentials to developer machines. Role-based access control rules are managed centrally, overriding local settings and ensuring consistent policy enforcement. Telemetry data is attributed to verified users and groups, providing accurate usage metrics. The gateway also allows for setting granular spend limits per user or group, acting as a guardrail against excessive usage. Inference requests remain within the Google Cloud perimeter, maintaining data privacy and compliance. Setting up the gateway involves provisioning GCP resources, configuring the gateway.yaml file, and deploying it to Cloud Run. Developers are then onboarded through forced login settings, directing them to the gateway for authentication. This setup streamlines enterprise adoption and enhances security for Claude Code usage within Google Cloud.
