Ghalibaf Says US 'Must Be Punished' Into Accepting Iran's Demands
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the US must be punished to accept Iran's wartime demands. This follows Iran's assessment of an indirect US response as inadequate, failing to meet all of Tehran's conditions. Ghalibaf stressed the need for the US to change its behavior and acknowledge Iran's legitimate requests. Iran's demands reportedly include the US fulfilling obligations under a June Memorandum of Understanding. This MoU, heavily influenced by Ghalibaf, aims for the US to end its blockade, offer sanctions relief, release frozen funds, and ensure an end to Israel's war in Lebanon. Ghalibaf expressed distrust in the US, leading to a two-part MoU structure. He also advocated for Iran to be prepared for both negotiation and conflict to establish deterrence. Drawing parallels to the Iran-Iraq War, Ghalibaf suggested Iran is preparing for a potentially protracted confrontation. During that war, the US supported Saddam Hussein, who used chemical weapons against Iran. Ghalibaf, a combat commander in that war, cited it as an example of Iran establishing deterrence. He concluded by noting that while the war brought hardship, it deterred future attacks on Iran for decades.
