GLP-1 weight loss drugs are now $50 a month for some Americans. Here’s who qualifies
A new temporary program called Medicare GLP-1 Bridge now offers certain brand-name weight loss drugs for $50 per month. This initiative aims to make these expensive medications more accessible to eligible Medicare beneficiaries. The program is a pilot that runs until the end of 2027. It is the first time many older adults can get GLP-1s covered by insurance strictly for weight loss. To qualify, individuals must meet specific body mass index and health condition requirements. Those already receiving GLP-1 coverage for conditions like diabetes are not eligible for this program. The goal is to gather data for potential long-term coverage solutions. The cost barrier for these life-changing medications is a major focus of this initiative. Covered medications include specific brand names like Foundayo, Zepbound, and Wegovy. Longer-term coverage beyond 2027 remains uncertain and depends on legislative action or further pilot programs.
