Gmail’s new inbox is the ultimate gateway drug to AI

Gmail, a foundational Google product, is launching new AI features to enhance user experience and drive engagement with Google's ecosystem. Initially known for its generous free storage, Gmail now boasts over 3 billion users. The company is integrating AI into its services, with three new AI features being rolled out. Two of these require a $20 monthly subscription to Gemini AI, while the third is free for all users. AI Overviews will transform the search bar into an AI-powered assistant that can answer complex queries and provide summarized information. Suggested Replies, an evolution of Smart Replies, will offer pre-written responses to emails, and a "Help Me Write" feature will generate entire emails from prompts. A select group of testers will also receive access to a new AI Inbox. This AI Inbox organizes emails into actionable to-do lists and provides summarized catch-up sections on various topics. Google envisions a future where AI leverages the extensive data within inboxes to assist with complex tasks like vacation planning. Initially, Gmail's AI operates separately from Gemini AI, without ads or integration with core Search. This integration is seen as a significant step in introducing personal AI assistants to a broad user base.
