Google Deletes Net-Zero Pledge From Sustainability Website

In September 2020, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced an ambitious goal for the company to operate carbon-free 24/7. He stated that Google intended to be the first major company to achieve this milestone, aiming to prove a carbon-free future was possible. Pichai acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in Google's ability to contribute to preventing the worst impacts of climate change. Five years later, the difficulty of this "energy journey" is becoming apparent. In June, Google's sustainability website highlighted a pledge for net-zero emissions by 2030. However, by July, this prominent pledge had been significantly downplayed. An investigation revealed that Google's net-zero commitment was quietly removed from its main sustainability website. It was demoted from its own dedicated section to a mention within the appendices of the company's sustainability report. This change suggests a shift in the prominence or perhaps the timeline of their ambitious climate goals. The removal raises questions about the current status and future of Google's net-zero aspirations.
