Google Ordered to Pay $2 Billion For Anti-Competitive Practices By Swedish Court

Google has been ordered to pay nearly $2 billion to Pricerunner by a court in Stockholm. Pricerunner, a Swedish price-comparison website, alleged that Google abused its search engine dominance for over a decade. The company claimed Google favored its own comparison shopping service over independent rivals. The awarded sum is intended to compensate for lost revenue due to Google's preferential treatment. Pricerunner also argued this conduct harms consumers by raising costs. Google disagrees with the ruling and is considering its legal options, as the decision can be appealed. The tech giant stated that changes made in 2017 have spurred growth for hundreds of comparison shopping services in Europe. This litigation stems from a 2017 EU antitrust decision that fined Google €2.4 billion for similar practices. The EU ruling allowed for subsequent lawsuits, and the EU's top court confirmed Google's antitrust violations. A German court previously ordered Google to pay €573 million in damages to two comparison websites, a ruling Google is also appealing. Additional similar cases are currently proceeding in Europe.
