Google Tests AI Data Center In Space
Google has launched a refrigerator-sized satellite into orbit, a crucial step in their Project Suncatcher. This initiative aims to develop AI data centers in space powered by solar energy. The prototype satellite is equipped with four specialized Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) designed by Google for machine learning. These TPUs are the same kind used in Google's terrestrial data centers. Due to heat limitations, the TPUs will run a simplified version of Google's Gemma AI model for brief 15-minute intervals. The satellite's primary purpose is to assess how these TPUs perform under the harsh conditions of spaceflight, including radiation and extreme temperatures. Launched on a SpaceX rocket on October 1st, this mission is considered a minimal test. Planet will be responsible for getting the satellite operational. Following this, Google will conduct tests on the TPUs. The project's long-term ambition is for the satellite to remain operational for an entire year.
