The order stems from concerns regarding privacy, data security, and the potential for systematic government surveillance. While local law enforcement will be required to remove these cameras from state property, the ban does not extend to cameras on city or county roads, or private property. DeSantis supports law enforcement but highlighted documented instances of camera misuse, including an officer tracking an ex-girlfriend. He expressed apprehension about Florida becoming a surveillance state and emphasized public concerns are valid. The Governor plans to ask the Florida Legislature to establish permanent regulations during the next session. He also supports a comprehensive AI Bill of Rights to penalize data misuse and protect citizens from digital monitoring. In response, several Florida sheriff's departments have already announced the termination of their own license plate reader programs.
