Stefan Bellof, a promising German racing driver born in 1957, was considered a future Formula 1 world champion and an idol to Michael Schumacher. His motorsport journey began in karting with his brother Georg, who eventually stepped aside to allow Stefan's career full focus. Bellof achieved significant success in karting, Formula Ford, Formula Vee, and Formula 2 before moving to sports car racing where he set a Nürburgring lap record. He made his Formula 1 debut in 1984 with Tyrrell, showing flashes of brilliance but was disqualified due to team violations, though he won championships in sports car racing that year. In 1985, he continued with Tyrrell in Formula 1 while also competing in sports cars, with a contract secured with Ferrari for 1986. Tragically, Bellof died on September 1, 1985, during a 1000 km race in Spa, Belgium. Bellof lost his life after a collision with Jacky Ickx at the notoriously dangerous Eau Rouge corner. The race was marked by premonitions and uneasy feelings from those close to Bellof. His death, following that of Manfred Winkelhock, contributed to Formula 1 teams banning their drivers from participating in other racing series.
