Henry Hobson Richardson, a renowned American architect, designed iconic buildings like Trinity Church and the Glessner House. He also built a family home on Staten Island, New York, which still exists today. Originally from Louisiana, Richardson pursued engineering before focusing on architecture, studying at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Upon returning to the United States, he settled in New York and worked on various projects in the Northeast. Encouraged by Frederick Law Olmsted, Richardson moved his family to Staten Island. His family home in Arrochar, a Stick-style house with a mansard roof and iron cresting, was completed by 1869. The house featured amenities like gas pipes, ahead of their time for the area. Richardson worked from home due to illness and dedicated two years to designing Trinity Church in New York before relocating to Massachusetts. The family home remained with his heirs before being sold and eventually subdivided into rental units. In 1946, its ground floor was transformed into a physician's office, a use that continues to this day.
